When given the chance to read an ARC from Ilona Andrews, you pick it up and don’t put it down until it is finished! I can happily say that I have finished this lovely piece of magic and am thrilled and somewhat dismayed to say that there is only one left in this story arc. Whatever will all of us Kate and Curran fans do? I can tell you what we will NOT do, we will never give up hoping that Ms. Ilona Andrews will give us lots more time in this world of magic.
When I started this series, I had no idea who this author was. My dear co-worker who is just as crazy as I am when it comes to books, recommended that I just give the first one a try. That was all it took and I devoured as many as I could. Now, I have been waiting impatiently each time a new one is released. Waiting to see what would become of our heroine (sometimes the anti-heroine) and her mate Curran. Each and every time a new book is released I am amazed at the abilities of the author to weave such an epic tale that gives us adventure, good and evil, love, friendship, fantasy, magic, sex and above all how one learns to define who they really are.
And that my friends is what this epic tale is coming down to; who Kate Daniels really is. Is she good? Is she evil? Can she be both? Her father Roland believes that “good and evil are in the eye of the beholder. That which benefits the majority in the long run isn’t evil.” Kate is struggling with this power that she holds. She holds within her very existence the power to rule all. She just wants to be happy and doesn’t really want this burden. But it is there taunting her and tempting her at every turn. This power is draining her very soul away, and if she doesn’t find a way to control it, she will become the exact opposite of what she wants. She will become her father; evil incarnate.
For now it seems the only path to destroy her father and reign in the evil that he has created is for her to die. To die means to lose the love that she has fought so valiantly for. Her friendships, her daughter, her land, and above all Curran; the Beastlord. Curran will do anything to save Kate from her father, her destruction and even herself. He will not let her die. Through thick and thin, battle after battle and everything in between, he is her equal. But as much as he loves her, Kate’s recklessness and her need to love without abandon may just get her killed. We will all find out just exactly what Kate is willing to risk with the final installment hopefully sometime next year. In the mean time, pick this one up, or start the first one in the series if you haven’t been exposed yet. Get exposed!
