“You only get one life. Well, two lives. The second one starts the moment you realize that you only have one.” Lachlan
It’s been a while since I have read a book where you feel your insides simply ripped out of you; in a good way. Get ready for a story that will do strange things to your heart, life break it two and put it back together and then do it all over again.
Addiction is a terrible awful disease and it affects all those that are around the person suffering from this affliction. The hero of our story Lachlan, has dealt with addiction his entire life. From his mother, to his chosen path later in life, addiction is his best friend and his worst enemy. It doesn’t allow for close relationships or love, it just pulls at you and drags you down until you are nothing but flesh and bones walking in a world not yet discovered. Until he meets Kayla. She is the girl that sticks out in the crowd, but doesn’t follow it. She is the one that says the things that everyone else is thinking and wish they had said it. She is the one that sparks a light in his darkness. Lachlan likes her right away, even though she scares him. He pretends that he is uninterested, but all it takes is a few little pushes in the right direction, and he is ready to take the plunge with her, right into bed and right into his heart.
It doesn’t take long for his to be completely addicted to her and not in a healthy way. Lachlan has yet to deal with his problems even though he stays away from his vices (for the most part) but they start to resurface as a result of being so into her. He is a beautiful man that has this darkness. He begins to love her almost immediately and is unsure of how to deal with it. All he knows is that he wants her with him for as long as he can have her, even if it means his demons are coming back to haunt him.
Kayla takes on this big beautiful Scottish man. She has no idea that he dealt with addiction in his past, but she knows that he battles something deep. She becomes his anchor in a brewing sea of unknown love and will try to keep her at all costs. Interestingly enough, Lachlan becomes her own addiction. Co-dependency can prove destructive and they will need every ounce of strength they have to overcome it. Even if it means they can’t be together.
It’s a beautiful story. One that I can’t seem to get out of my head. The love scenes are spectacularly written, so well in fact that I was ready to jump my husbands’ bones after every hot and steamy scene. Lachlan and Kayla connection is addicting even before there first encounter as they just have this amazingly quiet and powerful connection.
God, I just loved this story! Even though you know that love is not always enough to get you through, it sure is a beautiful thing and it inspires a desire to love like that everyday.
